Tamim Iqbal has withdrawn his name from the squad for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021. The star cricketer of the Bangladesh cricket team has made such a decision voluntarily. He made this decision after talking to the chairman of the BCB about the matter.
Tamim Iqbal made the announcement in a video on his official Facebook page. Mentioning his withdrawal from the upcoming event, he said that a while ago, he called the board president Papon Bhai and chief selector Nannu Bhai, and informed them over the phone which he wants to share with everyone that he doesn’t think he should be in the World Cup squad, due to he hasn’t played in T20 format for a long time.
More clarifying about his stand, Tamim mentioned that he doesn’t think his knee injury is a concern, because he was going to recover before the World Cup. In the video, he disclosed the main reason for making this decision “ I don’t think it would be fair on those players who have played in the last 15-16 T20Is that I haven’t played. I was probably going to be in the World Cup team, but I believe it wouldn’t have been fair on those players.”
The dashing opener added that the young players who are now playing in the national team should get a chance because their preparation will be better than him and can serve the team better.
However, Tamin also make it clear that this decision wasn’t a retirement but rule out a tournament for which there are better-prepared openers, and he think this is a fair decision.
Tamim has played only three international Twenty20 matches in the last three years since 2018. He last played in March 2020. After that, sometimes due to injury and sometimes due to personal reasons, he withdrew his name from this format. In all, he did not play the last 11 T20I matches for Bangladesh.
Tamim has been ruled out of a total of 16 matches before the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, including five in the ongoing series against New Zealand. That’s why the country’s best left-arm opener does not want to see himself in the World Cup team. He has removed himself from the World Cup squad by keeping faith for the youth.
