Bangladesh’s legendary wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim is relinquishing the responsibility of wicketkeeping in T20I cricket after the Tests. He told Russell Domingo, the head coach of the Bangladesh team, that he no longer wanted to do wicket-keeping in this version of cricket. Domingo made the announcement after the 3rd match of the series against New Zealand.
Before the start of the series, Domingo said that Nurul Hasan Sohan and Mushfiqur Rahim will share the responsibility of wicket-keeping in the series against New Zealand. After Sohan in the first two games, Mushfiqur was supposed to handle gloves in the third and fourth games. And the decision of the last match was to be taken later.
However, before the start of the third match, it was seen in the team sheet that Nurul’s name was there as the wicketkeeper. In a video conference of the BCB after the end of the match, Domingo said that initially after speaking to Mushi (Mushfiqur) he got to learn that Mushi was going to keep after the second game. But the Mr. Dependable of the Bangladesh cricket team told him that he probably doesn’t want to keep wicket in T20s anymore, so they have to move on.
He added that he didn’t think Mushfiqur’s desire to keep in this format is great anymore. They now have to keep their eyes on Sohan (Nurul Hasan) and he should perform the wicket-keeping duties during the competition.
The head coach stated that they have to rely on Nurul, who has been keeping wickets for Bangladesh in the T20Is since mid of July and he is the first nominated person for doing this job in the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup next month.
Mushfiqur Rahim resigned as wicket-keeper in Test format in 2019. Since then Liton Das has been in charge of wicket-keeping. Mushfiqur had earlier returned to the country due to family reasons from his last visit to Zimbabwe. He was replaced by Liton in ODIs and Nurul Hasan, who returned to the national team after nearly three years in T20Is.
Mushfiqur has taken 32 catches behind the wickets and made 29 stumpings as a wicket-keeper in T20I cricket. Besides, he has taken 5 more catches as a fielder rather than being behind the wickets.
